Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Nairobi Patron Irungu Nyakera has scoffed at Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, accusing him of presiding over one of the worst-performing county governments in the country.

He has also called on Nairobians to correct the mistake in 2027.

“Nairobi has suffered some of the worst leadership in the country. With Governor Sakaja consistently ranked among the bottom performers in national polls,” Nyakera wrote on his X account on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

He cited recent surveys that show widespread dissatisfaction among city residents.

“Surveys show that seven in ten Nairobians believe he has failed, citing corruption, insecurity, garbage, chaotic transport, and collapsed services,” he said.

A survey conducted by Infotrak Research and Consulting firm has ranked Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja among the lower-performing county leaders.

The Countrytrak Performance Index 2024 report, released on Tuesday, February 12, 2025, and which assessed governors’ performance across Kenya, placed Sakaja in the bottom ten, coming in at 37 out of 47.

This is after Controller of Budget (CoB) Margaret Nyakang’o’s report, released in December 2024, revealed that the Sakaja-led Nairobi County government was among 10 devolved units that spent zero shillings on development during the four months from July to October.

Instead of addressing these issues, Nyakera claims, Sakaja has focused on superficial tactics.

“Instead of fixing these issues, Sakaja has focused on goon-ship and PR theatrics,” the statement read.

Impeachment motion

Sakaja has now faced more impeachment attempts than any other county chief in Kenya. According to Nyakera, the list of those who have moved or supported motions against him includes former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko (2022), Senator Wamatinga (2023), Mt Kenya MPs (2023), MCA Joel Munuve (2023), MCA Robert Alai (2024), and MCA Maxwell Ochar (June 2025). The planned motion would be the seventh such attempt in less than three years.

“This record of endless impeachment threats, poor poll rankings, and daily complaints proves one thing: Sakaja is thoroughly incompetent,” Nyakera stated.

With less than two years to the 2027 general election, Nyakera called on Nairobians to remember the current administration’s failings and make a different choice at the ballot box.

“Nairobians made a huge mistake in 2022, and 2027 must be the year to correct it,” he said.

The tenure of the Nairobi City county boss is under threat after a faction of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) initiated plans to impeach him, citing alleged incompetence.

This followed a Speaker’s Kamkunji chaired by Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Ken Ngondi on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, during which frustrated MCAs expressed dissatisfaction with the governor’s performance.
