The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has condemned the increasing cases of violence and unacceptable treatment directed towards members of the National Police Service (NPS) by sections of the public.

In a statement issued on Monday, October 13, 2025,  IPOA expressed deep concern over recent incidents in which police officers have been assaulted, property destroyed, and lives lost.

The Authority cited disturbing occurrences at State House, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), and Kiganjo Police Station in Gatundu, Kiambu County, as evidence of a worrying trend of hostility against law enforcement officers.

At Kiganjo Police Station, a section of the facility was torched, resulting in the destruction of crucial police infrastructure and severely disrupting law enforcement operations in the area.

IPOA noted that such attacks not only endanger officers’ lives but also compromise public safety and the rule of law.

“These acts undermine public safety efforts and threaten the rule of law,” IPOA stated.

Furthermore, IPOA stated that law enforcement officers deserve protection and respect as they carry out their duties.

The Authority urged members of the public to exercise restraint and professionalism when interacting with the police, emphasizing that disagreements or instances of misconduct should be addressed through legally established channels rather than resorting to acts of violence.

“Attacking police officers not only constitutes lawlessness but also undermines the spirit and intent of ongoing police reforms, risking the erosion of hard-won progress in enhancing accountability and professionalism in policing,” the statement read in part.

IPOA also extended condolences to the families of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, calling the recent attacks tragic and unacceptable.

Additionally, IPOA emphasized that the rule of law must guide all interactions between law enforcement and the public.

“The Authority therefore urges all members of the public to uphold the rule of law and to seek redress through legally established channels in instances of police misconduct,” IPOA concluded.
