Inside the proposed KDF shopping mall

The Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, has presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of a new Defence Forces Welfare Services (DEFWES) Mall at Moi Barracks, Eldoret.
In a press statement on its official X account on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, KDF announced that the new mall will include supermarkets, restaurants, and fueling stations.

“The Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, today presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Defence Forces Welfare Services (DEFWES) Mall at Moi Barracks, Eldoret,” KDF wrote.
According to KDF, the project marks a major stride in the Kenya Defence Forces’ (KDF) commitment to improving the welfare and quality of life of its personnel, veterans, and their families within the Eldoret region.
While commissioning the groundbreaking, KDF noted that the establishment is a move by the Defence Forces Welfare Services to promote the social, economic, and cultural well-being of service members through various cost-friendly initiatives.
“DEFWES remains a key player in promoting the social, economic, and cultural well-being of service members through various cost-friendly initiatives, including the establishment of supermarkets, restaurants, and fueling stations,” KDF announced.
Additionally, General Kahariri commissioned the newly renovated Corporals’ Club.

KDF Day
This comes at a time when the Kenya Defence Forces is marking its 14th KDF Day celebrations in Moi Barracks in Eldoret town a celebrtions led by President William Ruto.
KDF Day was established following the launch of “Operation Linda Nchi” on October 14, 2011, which was a military operation in Somalia. The day is an annual tradition that serves to honour the courage, commitment, and sacrifices of Kenyan soldiers, both those who have served and those who have paid the ultimate price.
Worth noting, while KDF Day was established in 2011, it took its first observance on October 14, 2012. So far, the forces have commemorated at least 14 KDF Days marked with pomp and celebrations, which are often wrapped around various themes.
KDF recruitment
On the other hand, as the Soldiers celebrate the KDF day, the 2025 Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment exercise has officially begun, offering Kenyans the chance to serve in the Army, Air Force, or Navy. The drive was launched on Monday, October 13, 2025.
This year’s exercise is designed to provide clear pathways for a wide range of roles, from entry-level General Duty Recruits to Specialist Officers and tradespeople.
KDF has vowed to seal all corruption loopholes in the 2025 recruiment exercise.
