Erastus Ethekon, the newly nominated chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has expressed deep gratitude and a resolute commitment to steering the commission at a pivotal moment in Kenya’s democratic journey.

In his inaugural address on July 11, 2025, Ethekon said, “I am immensely honored by the trust placed in me to lead this vital institution—one that lies at the heart of our democracy.” His words underscored the weight of responsibility that comes with leading the country’s electoral body, especially at a time when public confidence in democratic institutions is under intense scrutiny.

Ethekon extended heartfelt congratulations to the newly sworn-in commissioners, acknowledging the demanding journey they’ve endured. “I extend my warmest congratulations to my fellow commissioners Ann Nderitu, Moses Mukhwana, Mary Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Aduol, and Fahima Abdallah, who are the new commissioners. I know the journey has been demanding, but however difficult it may have been, it was simply preparing us for the greater responsibilities that lie ahead,” he remarked.

His statement reflected his belief that their collective experience has laid the foundation for the critical work ahead.

The swearing-in comes amid Ruto gazetting a new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson, Ethekon, and six commissioners on July 10, 2025.

The swearing in was marked by a call to action as Ethekon emphasised the urgency and seriousness of their mandate. “Today marks the beginning of our service to the people of Kenya. We must approach this sacred duty with urgency, integrity, and unwavering commitment, guided by our Constitution and the laws of the Republic, but more importantly, guided by the expectations of every Kenyan,” he declared.

He reaffirmed the IEBC’s central role in safeguarding Kenya’s democratic process, stating, “Free, fair, and credible elections are the cornerstone of our democratic society. The IEBC carries the solemn responsibility of ensuring that every citizen’s voice is not only heard but honored.”

Ethekon’s nomination by Ruto comes amid a national push for electoral reforms following recent political unrest and contested elections. A seasoned legal professional and former Turkana County attorney, his appointment brings with it high hopes for restoring impartiality and trust in Kenya’s electoral system.

As he assumes leadership, Ethekon’s consistent emphasis on transparency, constitutional fidelity, and public service sets a tone of accountability. His vision, backed by the collective resolve of the new commission, signals a new chapter for the IEBC—one focused on strengthening the pillars of democracy and ensuring every vote truly counts.
