Ichung’wah reveals moment Raila was quietly hospitalised at Nairobi Hospital

Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah has said that the late ODM Party leader Raila Odinga had been hospitalised at Nairobi Hospital in 2023.

Speaking to a local TV station on Sunday, October 26, 2025, Ichung’wah narrated how he connected with Raila at the height of the 2023 Unga Revolution protests, which were driven by the rising cost of living.

Ichung’wah said that even though they often differed politically, they shared a bond beyond party lines.

“I used to meet Raila several times because, as you know, politics is not enmity. But again our friendship deepened immediately after the Unga Revolution protests or the Sufuria protests in 2023,” he said.

Ichung’wah disclosed that during the protests, Raila had quietly been admitted to Nairobi Hospital.

According to the legislator, very few people knew about it at the time.

“During that period, I know Kenyans didn’t know that Raila had been hospitalised at Nairobi Hospital, and it happened that whoever was treating him was a person whom I know,” he said.

He added that through that mutual connection, he and his wife managed to reach out to Raila, and they had a deep, honest conversation.

“My wife was called, and we talked with him deeply. From there is when I knew that Raila was about peace,” Ichung’wah said.

Ichung’wah described the meeting as one that changed how he viewed the former prime minister.

He said Raila had a strong desire to see a peaceful Kenya, contrary to the perception of him as a man who thrived on political conflict.

“He never wished Kenya to be a chaotic country,” Ichung’wah said.

“He even recalled how he had tried to reach out to Ruto at a meeting in Mt Kenya, but someone attempted to block the communication.”

The MP said the conversation revealed a side of Raila that many Kenyans never got to see, a man committed to dialogue, understanding, and national unity.

Ichung’wah concluded by saying that despite their political rivalry, Raila’s humility and wisdom left a lasting mark on him.

“Raila was not just a politician. He was a patriot who wanted the best for Kenya,” he said.
