Govt pathologist reveals Kyalo Mbobu was shot 8 times at close range

Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor has disclosed that slain Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu died from multiple gunshot wounds inflicted at close range.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, September 11, 2025, after conducting the post-mortem, Oduor said Mbobu’s body bore a total of eight bullet wounds, most of them concentrated on the right side.
Two bullets were recovered during the procedure, including one that had lodged in the left arm. The bullets have since been handed over to investigators for ballistic analysis to aid in tracing the firearm used in the attack.

According to Oduor, the gunshots caused extensive internal damage, particularly to the neck vessels and spine, leading to fatal bleeding.
“We were able to recover two bullets, which have been given to the investigative officer for ballistic purposes. There was a lot of bleeding and injury to the neck and spine,” he said.
Close-range gunfire confirmed
The autopsy also revealed the presence of gunpowder burns on Mbobu’s skin, an indication that the shots were fired from close range. Oduor noted that although the body had multiple entry wounds, the chest cavity remained intact, suggesting the assailants targeted specific parts of the upper body with precision.

“The gunshots caused severe bleeding from neck vessels and spinal injury, while the chest cavity remained intact. Gunpowder burns on the skin indicate the shots were fired at close range,” he added.
The findings paint a picture of a calculated and violent attack, one that left little chance of survival. Forensic experts believe the ballistic results will be crucial in piecing together the type of weapon used and possibly linking it to the assailants.
“We were able to recover two bullets, which have been given to the investigative officer for ballistic purposes,” Oduor said.
Mbobu’s killing has drawn national attention not only because of his stature in the legal profession but also due to the violent manner in which he was executed. He was ambushed in a drive-by shooting before the gunmen escaped on a motorcycle, according to initial police reports.
The autopsy report is now expected to form a critical part of the ongoing investigations.
