Govt introduces express lanes and additional gates for Nairobi National Park

The government has announced new changes for local and international tourists seeking to access the Nairobi National Park.
In the new changes, the government has introduced express lanes for tourists with prepaid tickets and two additional gates to reduce congestion.
In a statement on Monday, May 19, 2025, Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano announced that the new fully operational gates, East Gate (off Mombasa Road) and Mbagathi Gate (Magadi Road, opposite Multimedia University), would reduce congestion and save time for tourists.
“We deeply value every visitor who chooses to explore the beauty and wonder of Nairobi National Park. We understand that extended waiting times at entry gates over the weekend may have impacted your experience. The surge in visitor numbers is a testament to Kenya’s growing appeal as a premier tourism and conference destination, driven by the ongoing international meetings in Nairobi and the successful marketing efforts. We are committed to making your future visits seamless, enjoyable, and memorable,” Miano stated.
“Your enthusiasm for Kenya’s natural treasures inspires us, and we’re thrilled to see so many of you embracing our prepaid ticketing system- over 60% of visitors on Sunday used this convenient option! This is a step forward in our shared journey toward smarter, faster, and more enjoyable park access.”
Miano also announced that the government is exploring a new Southern Bypass entry.
The changes come hours after tourists were stranded at the park’s entry, and users who tried to buy tickets online experienced system glitches.
Miano says 60 per cent of visitors to Nairobi National Park had prepaid for their tickets.
