The government has issued a directive imposing a curfew in Tipis and Mau Narok, following violent clashes on the evening of Saturday, August 30, which left one person dead and dozens displaced.

Speaking on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Nakuru County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara announced that a curfew from 7 pm to 5 am would be in effect for one week to curb further violence.

He warned residents that those found outside during curfew hours could face arrest.

Kibaara stated: “Na ikifika masaa hiyo kila mtu kama ulichelewa kwa shamba uendelee kesho yake.” (loosely translated: “Once the curfew hours start, anyone still in the farms must stay there until morning.”)

The curfew resolution followed a consultative meeting between residents and authorities. Narok County Commissioner Kipketch Lotaita urged unity among locals, saying: Naomba tushirikiane wakaaji wa Tipis Market kwa sababu Tipis yote ni mpaka wetu wote wa Narok na Nakuru.”

loosely translating: “I call on residents of Tipis Market to cooperate, because Tipis belongs to all of us, both Narok and Nakuru residents.”)

The unrest reportedly began after residents protested a power outage that had persisted for nearly two months. However, the situation escalated as armed groups attacked homes, torched at least 12 houses, and assaulted civilians.

Roadblocks with burning tyres were reported at Mwisho wa Lami trading centre and other parts of the area, disrupting movement and heightening tensions.

Authorities call for calm

For much of Sunday, August 31, 2025, tensions remained high across Tipis, Mau Narok, Mauche, and parts of Njoro, with residents from different communities keeping to their compounds. This region has a history of inter-community clashes, with similar incidents reported in 2018 and 2020.

Police initially attributed the violence to frustration over prolonged electricity outages and a recent confrontation where locals blocked roads, which quickly escalated into widespread unrest.

Narok County Kipketch Lotaita confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that security forces will remain on high alert to prevent further incidents.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with security officials and adhere strictly to the curfew while the government works to restore calm and ensure the safety of all citizens in the affected areas.
