A fire at St. Joseph Seminary Boys School in Nakuru County has left two dormitories destroyed, adding to the growing list of school fire incidents that have put parents, teachers and education officials on edge in recent days.

The incident occurred on Sunday, May 31, 2026, evening, prompting a rapid response from emergency teams, including the Kenya Red Cross, firefighters and county disaster officers.

The fire razed two student dormitories, leaving behind burnt mattresses, damaged personal belongings and significant property losses. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were reported, a rare piece of good news amid the recent wave of school fire incidents across the country.

“Earlier today, the Kenya Red Cross, together with multi-agency partners, responded to a fire at St. Joseph Seminary Boys School in Nakuru County. The latest incident comes only days after the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, which claimed the lives of 16 students and left dozens injured after a dormitory caught fire at night while learners were asleep.

“Update: So far, 132 students have been affected following the fire incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County,” the Kenya Red Cross said while providing updates on the aftermath of the tragedy.

The Utumishi fire renewed concerns about dormitory safety, emergency exits and preparedness in boarding schools. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze as calls for stricter safety measures continue to grow.

Meanwhile, reports of unrest and fire-related incidents have also emerged from other schools in recent days, including Gacharage Secondary School, where property was damaged following student unrest. The incidents have raised fresh questions about safety and security in learning institutions.
