Govt confirms detection of 137 Mpox cases

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that 137 cases of Mpox have been detected across 17 counties, marking a significant expansion of the outbreak beyond its earlier concentration in Northern Kenya.
In a statement released on Monday, June 9, 2025, Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki said the government has stepped up efforts to control the spread and protect public health.
Cases across counties
The confirmed cases are spread across several regions, with the highest numbers in Busia (48) and Mombasa (37). Other affected counties include Nakuru (16), Makueni (10), Nairobi (5), Kajiado (3), Bungoma (3), Taita Taveta (2), Kericho (2), Kilifi (2), Kiambu (1), Uasin Gishu (1), Migori (1), Machakos (2), Isiolo (1), Kisii (1), and Kirinyaga (1).
“The ministry would like to inform the public of additional cases, especially in new counties outside the northern transport corridor,” the statement read.
The ministry noted that this spread indicates the need for greater vigilance across the country and heightened coordination at the county level.
Contact tracing underway
Health authorities have identified over 400 contacts, with 315 already monitored for the recommended 21-day period. Among them, 15 contacts tested positive.
The ministry also confirmed that over 4.8 million travelers have been screened at points of entry.
Laboratory testing remains ongoing, with 597 samples tested so far. The confirmed 137 positive cases are being handled in line with national health guidelines.
All suspected cases are being referred to the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) and other partner facilities for confirmation.
Surveillance and awareness
PS Muriuki stated that the Ministry is reinforcing its response through enhanced surveillance and community awareness campaigns.

Public communication has been a central tool, with 15 million SMS alerts already sent via Safaricom to raise awareness about Mpox symptoms and preventive measures.
“We appreciate the continued efforts by the public in helping us combat this outbreak and safeguarding the well-being of our republic,” Muriuki said.
The government urged Kenyans to remain alert and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
Authorities continue to call for calm and cooperation as efforts intensify to contain the virus and prevent further spread.
