Governors are the weak link in fight against corruption – Mungatana

Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has accused the governors of being the weak link in the war on graft.
Speaking during the ongoing Devolution Conference in Homa Bay County on Thursday, August 14, 2025, Mungatana said county bosses are quick to welcome calls for increased allocations, but resist scrutiny over how those funds are used.
Mungatana noted that governors are always happy when senators push for higher budgetary allocations to counties. However, he said the moment the conversation shifts to accountability, they become defensive.
“Governors are always happy when we are fighting for an increase in funds allocation to counties.
But when we are talking about the accountability of these funds, they start to spread rumours that we want to overthrow them, we are against them, we are planning nd impeachment motion,” he said.
He added that this behaviour undermines the fight against corruption at the county level.
According to him, leaders should embrace transparency as part of good governance, rather than perceiving oversight as a political threat.

Senators’ role in oversight
Mungatana further challenged governors to accept constructive criticism and act on findings from the Auditor General’s reports.
“Governors do not want to be told here you are wrong, here you are misusing funds. We senators, we offer secondary oversight via the auditor general’s report,” he stated.
He stressed that oversight is not about politics but about safeguarding public resources for the benefit of citizens.
The senator’s remarks sparked discussion among delegates at the conference, with some county officials defending the performance of devolved units while others agreed that misuse of funds remains a concern.
As the Devolution Conference continues, Mungatana’s comments have added weight to the debate on strengthening county governance.
His call for governors to work with senators rather than view them as adversaries reflects growing pressure for accountability in the use of public funds.
