Geoffrey Mosiria admits to faking an emergency during date to avoid restaurant bill

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has confessed to faking an emergency to avoid paying a restaurant bill on a date.
Narrating the incident humorously during an interview with a local podcaster on Thursday, December 4, 2025, Mosiria said the situation unfolded years ago when he invited a lady he had just met on social media for a simple meet-up in Nairobi’s CBD.
He explained that after exchanging numbers with the woman, he suggested they meet at Highlands Restaurant in Corner House, a place he believed would fit his budget.
“Hapo Highlands ukiwa na soo mbili uko sorted kama mko wawili,” he said, noting that a cup of tea and an andazi were both just fifty shillings at the time.
When the day came, Mosiria arrived in town. As he climbed the restaurant stairs, he bumped into another acquaintance, Augustus, who decided to join them.

By then, Mosiria had only Ksh500 in his pocket but still wanted to appear composed and confident.
They settled at a table and began ordering. Before the ladies arrived, Mosiria and his friend had bought tea and mandazi, costing fifty shillings each for a cup of tea and a mandazi, respectively.
When the two ladies finally walked in, Mosiria tried to keep the date brief, telling them they were in a rush so they should just take tea and andazi.
Fleeing the scene
Trying to look “bossy” and generous, Mosiria ordered a bowl of uji wa wimbi while his friend opted for tea, adding fifty shillings from his own pocket to top up the cost. Everything was still within budget until the unexpected happened.
“Kidogo kidogo madem wakasema, ‘Unajua saa hii ni saa kumi, let’s order for dinner.’ Sasa hapo, na nilikuwa nimeambia waiter wakicome wewe cheza. Madem wakaitisha menu, wakaitisha kuku na ugali ambayo inafika 450, na mimi niko na 500. Mwanaume, ungefanya nini ungekuwa ni wewe? Na wako wawili; huyu mwingine pia anaenda kuitisha kwa sababu ako na CFO,” he narrated.

In a quick attempt to save face, Mosiria pretended to receive a phone call. He told the caller to wait downstairs, then excused himself from the table.
Once he stepped outside, he immediately phoned Augustus and instructed him to inform the group that he had an emergency and wouldn’t be coming back.
“Sikuwa nataka aibu, na hivi ndio nilienda,” he admitted, saying he literally fled the restaurant rather than face the embarrassment of being unable to pay the bill.
