Njoroge Kururia, the MP for Gatundu North, has stirred debate with his comments about political leaders Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa.

During a morning interview on Friday, May 30, 2025, at K24 TV, Kururia argued that both leaders, having held high positions in past governments, share responsibility for Kenya’s current challenges.

“The kinds of Kalonzo, who was Vice President in Kenya, Wamalwa, the same, all these people have been in government,” he said.

Kururia stressed that since they worked alongside President William Ruto in previous administrations, they cannot escape blame for the country’s struggles.

This comes as young Kenyans, particularly Gen Z, voice concerns that the nation is heading in the wrong direction.

The MP acknowledged the public’s frustration but cautioned against judging leaders solely on recent events.

“You don’t build a country in two years. You build it over time,” he said, suggesting that nation-building is a long-term process, and the current government’s performance should be viewed in context.

Kalonzo and Wamalwa’s legacy

The remarks by Gatundu North MP come after Kalonzo and Wamalwa, while speaking in Tseikuru on Thursday, May 29, 2025, criticised the current administration’s handling of economic and social issues.

Their remarks were met with cheers from locals but sparked backlash from government supporters. Kururia’s response seems aimed at countering their narrative, pointing out their roles in past regimes.

Notably, both Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa have held influential roles in Kenya’s governance. Kalonzo served as Vice President from 2008 to 2013 under President Mwai Kibaki, while Wamalwa held Cabinet positions in various ministries during the Uhuru Kenyatta administration.

Their extensive political careers have seen them contribute to and influence major policy decisions, infrastructure projects, and constitutional reforms. For instance, Kalonzo was actively involved in the constitutional review process that led to the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution, while Wamalwa has often championed devolution and development in Western Kenya.
