Gatanga MP laments removal from Ruto-led WhatsApp group

Gatanga Member of Parliament (MP) Wakili Edward Muriu has lamented being removed from a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) WhatsApp group headed by President William Ruto over his links to Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP).

Speaking to Kameme TV on Friday, August 29, 2025, Muriu said that his political allegiance had been questioned after he openly stood against the impeachment of Gachagua, a decision that has now made him an outcast within the UDA inner circles.

Muriu alleged that heavy financial inducements were being used to sway lawmakers during Gachagua’s impeachment proceedings.

“We from Murang’a, we were not offered the money that was being offered to leaders to impeach former DP Rigathi Gachagua because we had issued a statement standing against the position.

“Where do you think the money came from? Of course, State House,” he claimed.

The MP further insisted that the impeachment saga exposed the government’s misuse of public funds and its betrayal of the promises that swept Ruto into office in 2022.

“So, what am I saying? The biggest problem we are having is that we thought William Ruto would change Kenya.

“I am the founding member of UDA Party, I am the SG of UDA in the NEC, even though I was removed from the WhatsApp group now that I belong to DCP,” Muriu explained.

Fallout within Mt Kenya politics

Muriu’s remarks highlight the deepening rift within Mt Kenya politics, where several lawmakers have shifted loyalty from Ruto’s camp to Gachagua’s emerging DCP.

He noted that his removal from the UDA WhatsApp group symbolised the extent of political intolerance at the heart of government leadership.

For Muriu, the fallout underscores the reality that President Ruto is no longer acting as the unifying leader he projected himself to be but rather as the source of Kenya’s current political problems.

His comments come at a time when other key figures, including Moses Kuria and Sicily Kariuki, have also spoken out on what they describe as betrayal and abuse of trust by the current administration.

Muriu concluded by saying Kenyans must remain vigilant against a leadership style that sidelines dissenting voices instead of embracing dialogue.
