Gakuya clarifies Gachagua quitting opposition for solo presidency bid
By Aloys Michael, September 16, 2025Embakasi North MP James Gakuya has dismissed claims that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has quit the opposition movement, even as the leaders continue to deliberate on who will be the flagbearer in the 2027 contest.
The opposition bigwigs have each declared their interest in running for the top office in the upcoming general polls, raising concerns about a possible unity shake-up should they fail to reach a consensus.

Speaking in an interview on a local TV station on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Gakuya, who is a staunch ally of Gachagua, said the DCP boss is strategising on the best tactics to unseat President William Ruto in the general polls.
“Gachagua has not quit the opposition movement. As a wise politician, if they plan to push Ruto out of power, the opposition must not lay all their ammunition cards on the table,” he explained.
The lawmaker maintained that the anti-Ruto troops are united and are beefing up for both the by-elections and the 2027 race.

However, Gakuya warned that any form of division in the process of wooing votes and pursuing political ambitions will weaken the movement’s political vet.
“I do not see a problem, Kalonzo, moving around looking for votes from Kenyans. There is nothing wrong with Matiang’i and Wamalwa moving around looking for votes. However, this team must ensure there is a convergence which shall remain firm,” he said.
“Have you heard Kalonzo or Gachagua complaining that they have started looking for votes?

Gachagua’s bold declaration
Meanwhile, as the debate continues to gain momentum on who will contest for 2027 on behalf of the opposition, Gachagua has expressed confidence that he is the only opposition candidate who can unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Sunday, September 14, 2025, during a church service at PCEA Ruringu Parish in Nyeri, Gachagua said that he has accepted the call by Kenyans to serve the country in the capacity of president.
The DCP boss said he already has the blessing of the Mt Kenya region and that Kenyans know he is the only opposition honcho with the ability to unseat Ruto.
“I have come home to say that I have accepted to vie for the presidency of the Republic of Kenya. Kenyans have looked and said the only leader who can remove Ruto from office is Riggy G, and I have come home to seek your blessings,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua had earlier explained why he is eligible to run for the presidency despite ongoing court battles.
