Gachagua: My campaign will not be built on lies of building roads and dams

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pledged to avoid making unrealistic campaign promises, stating that his presidential bid will focus on restoring Kenya to the standards achieved during former President Mwai Kibaki’s administration.

Speaking during a church service in Nyeri on Sunday, September 14, 2025, Gachagua said he had returned home to seek blessings before officially launching his political journey ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I came home yesterday to ask for blessings before I begin this journey. As I started this journey, I needed blessings from home,” Gachagua stated.

No false promises

The former Deputy President distanced himself from what he described as the tendency to make unrealistic campaign pledges, particularly regarding infrastructure projects.

Outlining his campaign’s details, Gachagua said his agenda will focus on reviving social services and enhancing the economic well-being of ordinary Kenyans.

“I don’t want to promise the country lies that I will build roads, dams, or electricity projects if Kenyans elect me as president. I don’t want to promise lies to the people of Kenya,” he said.

Restoration agenda

Gachagua emphasised that his priorities will be centred on restoring essential social and public services that he says have deteriorated since Kibaki left office.

“I only want to restore the Kenyan state to where Mwai Kibaki left us,” he stated.

The former DP highlighted healthcare reform as a top priority, promising to ensure hospitals are adequately stocked with medicines and equipment.

“A few things we want to do include restoring the healthcare system so that when we go to hospitals, there are drugs, and restoring the education system with the free education that Kibaki left,” he explained.

Gachagua also pointed out what he described as the erosion of Kenyans’ purchasing power, promising to address taxation issues affecting workers’ take-home pay.

“Rigathi Gachagua wants to restore the dignity of the payslip. Most Kenyans have had their pay slips raided, leaving them with no purchasing power,” he said.
