The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Rigathi Gachagua, has congratulated Malawi’s President-elect, Prof. Peter Mutharika, following his historic election victory, describing it as a continental milestone that reaffirms the power of the ballot in Africa.

Mutharika was re-elected with 56.8 per cent of the votes, while the incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera took 33 per cent of the ballots cast on September 16, 2025.

Speaking on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Chakwera conceded defeat to his predecessor, Mutharika, 85, in the largely poor Southern African nation, battered by soaring costs and severe fuel shortages.

“It is only right that I concede defeat out of respect for your will as citizens and out of respect for the constitution. It was clear that my rival Peter Mutharika has an insurmountable lead over me. In the days that remain, I want you to know that I am committed to a peaceful transfer of power,” Chakwera said.

In a statement on Thursday, September 25, 2025, Gachagua lauded both Mutharika and the people of Malawi for demonstrating resilience, courage, and democratic maturity.

He termed the election of Mutharika as Malawi’s 7th President not just a national triumph but a statement that Africa is no longer a playground for dictatorship, corruption, and self-serving regimes.

“This election was more than a national triumph for the Republic of Malawi; it is a continental statement. It is a declaration that Africa, the rising continent and a home to 1.5 billion people, is no longer a playground for religious hypocrisy, conmanship, corruption, pathological lies, dictatorship, and self-serving regimes,” he stated.

He commended outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera for conceding defeat and congratulating Mutharika, describing the gesture as “a great exhibition of maturity and respect for the will of the people.”

Gachagua further urged Kenyans to draw lessons from Malawi’s democratic exercise as the country heads toward the 2027 General Election.

“Kenya is equally watching, ahead of the 2027 General Elections, and Kenyans are wise people. I call on the people of the Republic of Kenya to draw strength from Malawi’s courage and exercise of sovereign power,” he said.

“Just like our Malawian brothers and sisters, we must reject fear and cynicism, reject hopelessness, and reclaim our future through democratic means.”
