Gachagua condemns withdrawal of Maraga’s security

By , June 28, 2025

Former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has weighed in on the controversial withdrawal of security details for former Chief Justice David Maraga.

Speaking during a candid conversation with a local media station on Friday night, June 27, 2025, Gachagua criticised the government’s decision to withdraw the official security detail of Maraga, labelling the move as petty and a direct assault on constitutional freedoms.

“I am told they have taken away the security of the former chief justice, David Maraga, because of appearing to support Gen Z. That is how petty this administration is, if somebody is seen on the streets, it is democracy,’ Gachagua said.

The second deputy president, in addition, noted that going to show solidarity with Gen Z was part of democracy and that taking away Maraga’s security because he was on the street is unacceptable.

“Going to show solidarity with Gen Z is part of our democracy; taking away the security of Maraga because he was on the street is very petty and unacceptable,” he added.

Maraga’s security

The remarks come after Maraga revealed that his security detail had been withdrawn over what he said was his participation in the Gen Z protest.

In an official letter dated June 27, the former CJ stated that his security details were recalled on Thursday, June 26, 2025, and asked to report to their respective stations without any explanation given to him.

“As you may well know, the benefits of a retired chief justice are provided for and protected under Section 5A… Since my retirement on 12th January 2021, I have had the services of armed guards and police drivers, whom I requested from the National Police Service and was granted, as per the provisions of the Act cited above,” Maraga said.

“However, on 25th June 2025, the day I joined the youth and families of the victims who died and those who went missing from the events of a year ago, one of the officers attached to me was asked not to report for duty but instead go and make a routine (monthly) entry in the firearm register.”

“On arrival that morning, he was suddenly informed of a training that was to take place on the same day. The following day, on 26th June 2025, I was informed that the rest of the security officers had been asked to report to their stations without any further information.”
