Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday, September 20, 2024, begged President William Ruto to let him complete the remainder of his term amid plans for his impeachment.
Speaking during a live TV show, Gachagua urged Ruto to keep his end of the bargain in their 2022 pact.
“Please allow me to work for the remaining three years. Let me serve the people of Kenya and keep your promise Mr President so that you can earn the trust of the people of Kenya,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua beseeched the president to call to order allies close to him who were degrading and harassing him, noting that Ruto had made a commitment to him in the presence of his family.
“Be a good man and a good Christian; Keep that promise President William Ruto because that is a commitment you gave to the people of Kenya and you gave me that promise in front of my wife and children that you will never allow anybody to demean, disrespect, harass, persecute, intimidate and coerce me,” the DP stated.
‘Jinxed DP position’
The second in command intimated that even if the seat of the deputy president was jinxed, he had only served one year before all hell broke loose.
“Let the insults in your presence stop. Let people not hold night meetings. Let this money that is being used in the night meetings assist us to pay pending bills,” Gachagua appealed.
On his impeachment, Gachagua stated that he had a life before he became the deputy president and that he would take it in his stride.
“I am a very simple guy; those things do not bother me. I just came here the other day. If today, members of Parliament decided that I go home, my home is a few metres from here. My clothes here would not even fit in a pick-up. I just take and leave,” Gachagua revealed.
He, however, warned that such a move would lead to political instability, stating that he was elected in a joint ticket with Ruto and that he enjoys a considerable following in the country.
Gachagua indicated that Ruto could put all the political upheavals to rest as he had quelled initial plans of his impeachment.
“It is really, upon the President to put his house in order. I have talked to the president to put his house to order but he is yet to do it,” Gachagua added.
