Former Energy Cabinet Secretary John Munyes has called on the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to transfer all security officers in Turkana and West Pokot counties ahead of the August 9 elections.

While addressing media in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, Munyes called for the redeployment of security officers who have overstayed in the bandits-prone region. The ex-Turkana senator accused the said officers of condoning armed bandits who have killed many people and made away with several herds of livestock.

Munyes revealed that over ten people have been killed in a span of three weeks due to the attacks. The latest incident was on Saturday morning that led to demonstrations at Kainuk.

“These killings are coming at a time when there is a big drought in Turkana. We have engaged the government and very soon there will be redeployment of senior security officers and change of command in this region to curb the issue,” Munyes said.

“Many people are also nursing gunshot injuries inflicted on them by the bandits. Livestock has also been driven away,” he added.

Munyes, who recently resigned from the Cabinet to run for Turkana governorship, said that the frequent attacks from the bandits had led to economic sabotage to the people of Turkana.

“The situation in Turkana is unacceptable. You can imagine a farmer losing over fifty herds of cows that he has reared for years just in one day. This situation is making the people of Turkana who rely on these animals poorer,” Munyes said.
