Dagoretti North Member of Parliament (MP) Beatrice Elachi has delivered a heartfelt message to Kenyans as she bids her late son Elvis Murakana farewell.

Speaking during Elvis’s memorial mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Nairobi on Friday, March 28, 2025, Elachi urged parents to pray for their children and encouraged young people to prioritise communication with their families.

Elachi reflected on the struggles of today’s generation, emphasising that many young people prefer to handle their challenges independently without involving their parents.

She recounted how her son was in bed by 10:30pm before receiving a call for an errand. He rushed to assist but tragically met his fate on the way back due to a car tyre burst.

“I want to talk to parents about our children; we have a generation that believes that it can sort out their own problems, so they wake up at any hour when one is in a challenge, and they will not even tell you. They will go; they will deal with the problem; they will only tell you if indeed they were unable to do it and there is a crisis, but they will bail each other out, and you will not believe,” Elachi said.

“In the same breath, that is what Elvis did; he was in bed at 10.30pm. He was called on an errand of theirs, rushed, and did it well, so when he was coming back, he got a tyre burst with the car.”

Elachi called on mothers to pray fervently for the current generation, acknowledging the difficult and uncertain times they live in.

“We, as mothers today, let us pray for this generation. It is a very tough generation that needs a lot of prayers,” she added.

Elachi to Gen Z

She urged young people to embrace prayer and seek divine protection before stepping out of their homes or getting into their vehicles.

“I want to tell the young people before you walk out of the door of your mother’s or your own, remember to pray and tell God to open doors as you go out and to bring you back in peace,” Elachi urged.

“You walk into the car and pray because on the roads we have people; pray for that car and tell it it is not there to cause an accident but for you to go where you are going and to come back safe.”

Elachi further encouraged Gen Zs to always inform their parents before helping a friend or handling a problem, rather than waiting until afterward.

She emphasised that keeping parents informed provides them with peace of mind.

“It is good to go and help your friends, but remember to tell your parents you are going to help. Do not finish helping and then come back. Please learn to tell your parents there is a problem; we are going to sort it out. That will really help them,” she stated.

Message to politicians

Turning her attention to politicians, Elachi reminded them that true friendship in politics is rare. She urged them to stand by each other, serve the people diligently, and never forget to pray for their families and themselves.

“Politicians, remember you have no friends; be friends with each other, stand with each other, love each other, and remember to pray for your children and pray for yourself,” she concluded.

“The job we do is the most difficult, but remember to serve the people diligently.”
