Elachi raises alarm over rising cases of sperm harvesting from youth

Dagoretti North Member of Parliament (MP) Beatrice Elachi has expressed deep concern over what she described as an increasing incidence of sperm harvesting from Kenyan youths.
Speaking during a conversation with a local media station on Wednesday night, August 7, 2025, Elachi stated that the sperm harvesting trend is reaching concerning levels and warrants immediate attention and policy action.
The vocal MP, in addition, highlighted that even medical professionals are expressing growing unease, citing cases where young individuals are approached with cash offers in exchange for donations.
She further called for urgent legal safeguards and urgent policy interventions to curb the practice and protect Kenyan youth.
“It is not just about the Kidneys, it is very sad today in the country, we have a very high harvesting of sperm from our young people, and it is very sad, and even the doctors sometimes are wondering, but you see, you are coming with someone and everyone Ksh100k, and they have their pocket money,” she said.
“It is something that is very high in the country now, and it is something we need to look at and to protect young people.”

Tissue act
During the same interview, Seme MP James Nyikal disclosed that the issue extends beyond kidneys, noting that many organs, including sperm donated by young people, are being harvested.
He also revealed that as a parliamentary committee, they are currently working on a Human Tissue Act and a Tissue Bill, which he believes, once passed into Law, should address these concerns by introducing legal and ethical safeguards.
“It is not just Kidney many organs and she is talking about sperms that have been donated by young people, we actually have a tissue act and a tissue bill that we are working on as a committee,” he revealed.
Organ transplant
This comes after Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale inaugurated the Independent Investigative Committee on Tissue and Organ Transplant Services.
The committee was inaugurated on Friday, April 25, 2025, at a function that was also attended by Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Medical Services; Mary Muthoni, PS Public Health and Professional Standards; and Director General for Health Patrick Amoth.
“Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale today inaugurated the Independent Investigative Committee on Tissue and Organ Transplant Services at Afya House, Nairobi, pursuant to Gazette Notice No. 78 dated 23rd April 2025.
“The committee, chaired by Prof. Elizabeth Bukusi, has been established in response to public concern over serious allegations of malpractice and ethical violations in organ transplant procedures at Mediheal Group of Hospitals,” a statement by the Ministry of Health shared on X on Friday, April 25, 2025.
According to the ministry’s statement, Duale said the investigation will help earn public trust in the health system again.
“This is a moment of reckoning. We are not just conducting an investigation—we are restoring public trust in the health system. We will not tolerate impunity or protect any wrongdoing.
“We will act decisively, transparently, and in the best interest of the people of Kenya,” Duale said.
