A session of the Senate was briefly interrupted after Speaker Amason Kingi confronted nominated Senator Karen Nyamu over her dress code, warning her against violating parliamentary rules.

The matter was raised by Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, who questioned Nyamu’s appearance as she walked into the chamber with her jacket partly worn and the rest hanging off her shoulder on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.

“Mr Speaker, have you seen Karen Nyamu the way she is dressed today? Walking into the house with one side of her jacket worn and the rest hanging,” Wambua said.

“Mr Speaker, you know this house, we can forgive, there is no problem, but Mr Speaker, you must enforce rules in this house. Next time I will walk in with my jacket on my shoulder,” he added.

In response, Speaker Kingi cautioned Nyamu, declaring her out of order.

“Senator Karen Nyamu, you are out of order for violating the Speaker’s rules. You cannot walk into the chamber. I will give you a warning for today. You repeat the same thing, I will ask you to leave the chamber. Let us observe the Speaker’s rules,” he said.

Not the first time

This is not the first time Senator Nyamu has found herself in the spot over her dress code in Parliament.

In 2023, she was ejected from the Senate chambers for wearing a sleeveless dress, which contravened the parliamentary dress code. At the time, Migori Senator Eddy Oketch petitioned the Speaker, arguing that her attire had brought disrepute to the House.

Speaker Kingi then ruled that Nyamu had indeed violated the rules and ordered her out of the chamber.

“Senator, I am afraid you do not fit the bill, and I am going to ask you to leave the chambers,” he said in his ruling.

Parliamentary rules require women Members of Parliament to dress in decent formal or business wear. The guidelines are designed to uphold decorum in the House, with breaches treated as violations of standing orders.

The latest confrontation once again places Nyamu in the spotlight over her choice of attire, raising questions about adherence to parliamentary traditions.
