The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) has issued a strong condemnation following a violent incident at Kitengela Subcounty Hospital during the Saba Saba Day protest.

In a statement shared via the union’s official X account on Monday, July 7, 2025, KUCO said that goons stormed the facility and attacked clinical officers and other health workers, resulting in the theft and vandalism of medical equipment.

The union, while invoking the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act, called for the immediate withdrawal of all health workers from the facility, citing safety concerns.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible the attacks on clinical officers and other health workers at Kitengela Subcounty Hospital this afternoon by goons who also stole and vandalised equipment. This calls for immed withdrawal of all health workers in line with the OSH Act,” KUCO stated.

Goons attack

This comes after patients at the Kitengela Sub County hospital were under siege for hours after goons stormed the health facility, disrupting access to healthcare while vandalising a section of the county facility.

Patients, including those in critical condition, were locked up as doctors, nurses, and medical officers scampered for safety.

The attack erupted after a 21-year-old was shot dead during the Saba Saba protest in Kitengeta, and he was taken to the facility. The goons were battling with police officers who intended to carry away the body.

Red Cross officials became the only hope of tens of injured protesters and officers who thronged the facility seeking first aid for the protest-related injuries.

Confirming the incident, a senior nurse at the facility said the victim was shot on the chin and was brought to the facility dead.

“We have one casualty who has succumbed from a bullet injury. He had already succumbed when he was brought in by a group of youths. We have four who are admitted with bullet injuries. I cannot ascertain the number of those coming in for treatment over protest-related injuries for now, “she said.

Kitengela has time to time, borne the brunt of chaotic anti-government protests that have led to death, injuries, massive destruction and looting.
