A small aircraft believed to be operated by Phoenix Aviation and leased by Amref has crashed in a residential neighbourhood near Mwihoko Secondary School in Ruiru sub-county, Kiambu County. The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m., startling residents as the plane came down rapidly and struck a home before bursting into flames.

In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident and said emergency response teams were heading to the scene.

“A chopper has reportedly crashed in a residential area in Mwihoko, Kiambu County. Response teams are en route to the scene,” the statement read.

Locals who witnessed the crash described the aircraft spinning out of control before hitting the ground with a loud explosion that shook nearby buildings. Some reported seeing people on board trying to use parachutes, but the blaze that followed the impact left them with no chance of survival.

Smoke could be seen rising high into the sky as the wreckage burned, attracting crowds from the surrounding area. The fire also affected nearby homes, but firefighters from the county government responded promptly and managed to stop the fire from spreading further.

Security teams, including the military and police, arrived shortly afterwards and secured the crash site. They controlled the crowd and prevented people from getting too close as emergency crews continued their work. The number of people on board the helicopter is still unknown. Rescue operations are ongoing.
