Cheruiyot slams opposition leaders for defending Saba Saba protests

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has hit out at opposition politicians over their defence of persons perpetrating the violent protests witnessed in recent days across the country, with Saba Saba being marred by chaos.
Speaking at an empowerment drive in Cherangany, Tranz Nzoia County, on Friday, 11, 2025, the Kericho Senator asserted that the country must uphold peace and that those found culpable will face the full force of the law.
“I have seen some politicians defending the goons who are destroying people’s businesses and houses. We want a country where everyone respects people’s property. We must condemn such leaders in very strong words. I heard another politician say that they should be allowed to destroy government offices since they belong to the people. I want to tell them that any person or leader who plays with other people’s property should face the law,” he stated.
Intimidation
His sentiments come after Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka accused the government of engaging in a systematic campaign to crack down on individuals opposed to the regime.
Speaking on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, Kalonzo accused the state of attempting to intimidate and silence perceived dissidents of the government by preferring fabricated charges against them.
Kalonzo’s remarks followed after he attended the hearings of Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, Peter Wa Wanjiru and Serah Wanjiku Thiga at the Kahawa Law Court following their arrest.

“Today, I’m at Kahawa Law Court to stand in defence of the Manyatta MP, Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, as well as Peter Kinyanjui Wawanjiru and Serah Wanjiku Thiga, who now face outrageous terrorism charges. Astonishingly, Hon. Mukunji was arrested alongside an Inooro TV journalist and the boda boda rider who ferried him,” his statement read.
The opposition figure promised to engage their legal brains to challenge the charges in the court of law.
“These are trumped-up accusations meant to intimidate and silence leaders who stand with the people. As I said yesterday at this courthouse, these tools of tyranny have an expiration date. We will fight this blatant abuse of power with the ultimate weapon: the Constitution of Kenya, 2010,” he stated.
