Cherargei offers condolences to Marakwet families following deadly mudslide

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has expressed deep sorrow over a massive mudslide that struck Elgeyo Marakwet County, Marakwet East constituency, late Friday, October 31, 2025, during heavy rains.
The disaster claimed lives and destroyed homes, farmland, and key roads, leaving residents in mourning and several villages cut off.
The senator took to his account on Saturday, November 1, 2025, to offer condolences, tweeting, “Poleni sana to the people of Marakwet East for the unfortunate massive landslide that has claimed lives. It has destroyed land, roads, and property during the ongoing rains. My deepest condolences go to the families that have lost loved ones, and you are in our prayers during these tragic moments.” He urged the community to stay strong while recovery efforts continue.

Following the massive mudslide in Marakwet East, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed that several people were injured. The disaster struck Moror Village and Chesongoch Centre after heavy overnight rains.

In a statement on their official X account on Saturday, November 1, 2025, the Red Cross said, “A landslide following heavy overnight rains has hit Moror Village and Chesongoch Centre, Elgeyo Marakwet County, leaving many people injured.”
The organisation added that its teams are already on the ground, providing immediate support to affected families. “Our response team has been activated to respond, assess the situation, and support those affected,” the statement read.
Community impact
The mudslide has destroyed farmland and blocked roads, leaving some villages isolated. Families have lost homes, crops, and essential property, forcing many to seek temporary shelter.

Villagers reported waking to flooding and collapsing soil that swept away property and cut off access routes to nearby towns.
This is not the first time that Marakwet East has experienced a deadly landslide. In 2024, a similar disaster struck the homestead of a retired teacher in Tuturung, Sambirir Ward, claiming the lives of two people and leaving another injured.
