Former police spokesperson Charles Owino has called for civility among Kenyans to avoid the nation degenerating into anarchy.

This comes amid backlash over the compensation of the victims of protests and calls for legal actions against the civilians and police involved in the crime.

Speaking in an interview on a local TV station on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Owino urged both the police and youths to be disciplined to avoid deaths as a result of police shooting and other forms of brutality that can surge public anger, like in Nepal.

“I personally do not advocate for unlawful killing, and I have charged police as a DCI officer to court who have killed unlawfully, and I have testified, and they have been jailed and sentenced to life,” he said.

“What I do not accept is indiscipline. There were no goons in Kikuyu when they were banning the police station. We must be disciplined as a country. Both the public and the police must be disciplined.”

Nepal, a country in South Asia, experienced one of the most radical citizen-led coups d’état in recent history. The youthful Gen Z overthrew top state officials over rampant corruption, increased human rights violations, and disregard for the constitution.

Properties were scorched as anger grew among the Nepalese Gen Z, who forced Prime Minister (PM) Sharma Oli to resign.

The country currently has an interim administration that will govern till March 2026. However, Owino has warned Kenyans against allowing their nation to go down Nepal’s path, saying the consequences will be dire.

“We saw what happened in Nepal. Yes, they have changed the government. How many years will they take to recover? He posed.

The former police mouthpiece has also called for the restraint and safeguard of the country at all costs, saying that the police may be forced to use firearms if the circumstances force them.

“This is our country. We must stop lying to the youth that the police will not use their firearms. We want to limit as many casualties as possible. Equally, police officers will take individual responsibility. If you kill someone who has only a handkerchief, police officers must be told, they will face the law,” he explained.
