A five-storey building under construction in Muthiga, Kinoo area in Kiambu County collapsed Sunday morning.
The residential building caved in last night and could come tumbling down at any given moment. At the time of our reporting, the building was still leaning on an adjacent building identified as Crestwood Apartment.
While confirming the incident, the National Construction Authority (NCA) says that residents of the adjacent building have since been evacuated due to the fear that its stability has been tampered with.
“Early this morning at approximately 0100 hours, a building under construction on the site of Proposed Residential UNit, Plot LR No. 6244 in the Muthiga area of Kinoo, Dagoretti, collapsed. The collapsed building has affected the adjacent building, whose residents were promptly evacuated to ensure their safety,” NCA said in a statement.
NCA further noted that efforts to ensure the safety of the adjacent building and the surrounding development is not affected by the incident are ongoing.
In the meantime, the construction authority has said that investigations are currently ongoing to find out what might have caused the building to collapse.
“The sit of the incident has been cordoned off the National Police Service. The Authority, County officials, National Building Inspectorate, the National Disaster Management Unit and other members of the multi-agency team are all on-ground conduction investigations. A full report will be issued once comprehensive investigations are concluded,” the authority said.
