Kasipul ODM parliamentary aspirant Boyd Were has raised alarm over what he described as a plot by his rivals and independent candidates to incite chaos during the party nominations scheduled for Wednesday, September 2025.

In a statement released through his campaign team on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Were claimed that a prominent competitor and a senior county official were behind the plans, warning that the disruption could involve violence.

“We are astonished that those who recently accused others of orchestrating political violence in our constituency are now mobilising violent characters from outside our region to undermine the ODM nominations and blame others for the ensuing chaos,” Were stated.

Chaos claims emerge

He singled out independent candidate Philip Aroko, once a loyal ODM member, accusing him of disappearing from the party when it announced the primaries.

Were claimed that Aroko and others were attempting to use intimidation to gain political mileage.

“He thrives on chaos, but we have denied him that chaos throughout the campaign,” he added.

According to Were, credible reports indicated that some candidates had recruited criminals from Nairobi and Kisumu, armed with illegal weapons, to disrupt the process.

His team also accused a senior county official of convening meetings to back his in-law’s candidacy through intimidation and violence.

The campaign further claimed that five of Were’s key supporters had been marked for elimination. “We learned that he has enlisted a notorious criminal who brought gunmen from Eastleigh in Nairobi to cause chaos in Oyugis,” the team warned.

Police urged action

Were called on the police to act firmly against any attempts to incite bloodshed. “To the people of Kasipul, we call on you to reject any form of violence in tomorrow’s nominations. Let us turn out in large numbers to demonstrate that the ODM party remains the strongest in the region,” he urged.

Were, son of the late MP Ong’ondo Were, who was killed on April 30, 2025, will battle Newton Ogada, Okindo Majiwa, Dr. Adel Ottoman, and George Otieno, also known as Ajo Mbuta, for the ODM ticket.

The by-election is scheduled for November 27, 2025, with KANU, Wiper, UPA, and the Kenya Moja Movement also fielding candidates.
