Activist and human rights defender Boniface Mwangi has launched his 2027 presidential bid.

Through a post on X on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, the CEO of Vocal Africa, Hussein Khalid, shared a video clip and confirmed he was attending the launch of Mwangi’s bid at Ufungamano House in Nairobi.

The declaration by Mwangi, who has for years been a fierce critic of successive governments, adds to what is shaping up to be one of Kenya’s most crowded presidential races.

According to Hussein Khalid, Mwangi’s announcement coincided with celebrations marking 15 years since the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution.

“Presently celebrating 15 years of Katiba at the launch of @bonifacemwangi’s presidential bid at Ufungamano House, Nairobi,” Khalid wrote as he posted a short clip showing supporters cheering at the venue.

Mwangi, a photojournalist turned activist, has previously led protests on social justice, corruption, and governance and now says he is ready to offer himself as an alternative voice at the ballot.

Other key contenders

The entry of Mwangi comes at a time when several other leaders have also declared interest in unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 contest.

Among them is Democracy for Citizens’ Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua, who has repeatedly clashed with the government since his impeachment as Deputy President.

“I will be on the ballot as a candidate for President. I am qualified, and I have support.

“The Constitution guarantees your right to vie for elective office even if you have been convicted, if you have not exhausted the remedies available in law.

“The Supreme Court has not made a ruling on my impeachment,” Gachagua told a local TV station on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has also made it clear that he will contest, while Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah and former Chief Justice David Maraga have equally declared interest, citing governance failures and the need for constitutional order.

Dr Fred Matiang’i, the former Interior CS, is another potential contender whose name continues to feature in political discussions.

With Mwangi’s announcement, the stage is now set for a highly competitive 2027 presidential race that could see activists, seasoned politicians, and reformists square off against the incumbent.
