Boniface Mwangi criticizes SHA after Nandi governor holds fundraiser for ailing resident

Activist Boniface Mwangi has raised questions on the effectiveness of the Social Health Authority (SHA) after Nandi Governor Stephen Sang led a fundraiser to support the medical treatment of an ailing resident.
Taking to his official X account on Monday, March 31, 2025, Mwangi pointed out that Governor Sang would not need to fundraise for any resident’s medical treatment if SHA was indeed working.
While criticizing the state-sponsored national medical cover, Mwangi said that Governor Sang’s fundraiser was enough proof that SHA is a sham.

He further pointed out that it was odd for the leaders from President William Ruto’s backyard to hold medical harambees when the government has really popularized SHA as a game changer.
“The governor of Nandi County, @Araap_Sang, held a fundraiser yesterday to support the medical bills of an ailing voter. This is enough proof that the Ruto sham health insurance called SHA isn’t working. If it did, leaders from Ruto’s backyard wouldn’t be holding medical Harambees,” Mwangi stated.
Governor Sang’s fundraiser
Governor Sang had on Sunday, March 30, 2025, revealed that he had led a medical fundraiser for a constituent of Aldai Constituency whom he identified as Haron Kipchumba.
In a statement shared via his official Facebook account, the Nandi County boss revealed that he had been joined by his fellow leaders at the fundraiser.

He further wished Kipchumba a quick recovery, praying that he returns to good health as soon as possible.
“Wishing a speedy recovery to Haron Kipchumba from Ndurio, Aldai Constituency. May you regain your health swiftly. With fellow leaders at the fundraiser in Ndurio to support Haron’s medical treatment. We look forward to your full recovery and return to good health. Quick Recovery!” Governor Sang stated.

SHA has faced numerous criticism after his rollout in October 2024, with a section of Kenyans reporting failures.
The Rural & Urban Private Hospitals Association of Kenya (RUPHA) has also been at crossroads with SHA over failure to settle medical claims.
Pending claims scrutiny
However, The newly appointed Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, has constituted a committee to help scrutinise and determine the legitimacy of pending bills owed to hospitals by the now-defunct National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
Through a special gazette notice, CS Duale confirmed the formation of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) Pending Medical Claims Verification Committee.
According to the notice, the committee will be chaired by James Masiro Ojee, who will be deputised by Anne Wamae.
Members of the verification committee include Edward Kiplimo Bitok, Meshack Matengo, Meboh Atieno Awour, Tom Nyakaba, Catherine Karori Bosire, Paul Wafula, Catherine Mungania, James Oundo, Jackline Mukami Njiru, Judith Awinja and David Dawe.
They will be assisted by a secretariat comprising Peter Kitheka (Head of the Secretariat), Shawn Mogaka, Consolata Ogot (Dr.), Emmanuel Ayodi Lusigi (Dr.), Halima Yussuf and Wilbert Kurgat.
