Controversial bishop and businessman David Kariuki Ngari popularly known as Gakuyo has finally bowed to pressure and apologised for hateful statements he allegedly made last week and which were perceived as demeaning to women.
Gakuyo who is reported to have made scathing remarks against former Thika town MP Alice Ng’ang’a had earlier maintained that he would not apologise, insisting that the statement he made was directed to a poorly dressed nominated Kiambu MCA.
Following major protests in Thika town organized by women leaders under the umbrella of Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) led by Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba, Gakuyo who is eying the Thika town parliamentary seat had earlier maintained that the leaders were out to put down his political aspirations.
But speaking after he was summoned by Thika DCI offices where he recorded a statement, Gakuyo apologised to women and anyone who felt injured by his remarks saying he never meant to profile women.
“I feel very sorry for anyone who felt hurt by the remarks I made. I never meant to profile anybody and Thika is a cosmopolitan area where anyone is free to seek elective positions,” he stated.
According to Thika Sub-County Police Commander Daniel Kinyua, Gakuyo is accused of using abusive language against Emma Wanjiku, a nominated Kiambu County assembly member during a meeting attended by Kiambu governor James Nyoro.
Kinyua stated that DCI sleuths have since taken over the matter for investigations and Gakuyo might be presented to court upon completion of the investigations should he be found culpable.
So far, the area police boss said they have not preferred any charges against Gakuyo and that should he be found culpable, his officers will arrest and arraign him in court.
“We are still investigating the matter and have not preferred any charges against him but investigations will advise the way forward,” said Kinyua.
While urging leaders to use polite and mature language during political gatherings, Kinyua stated that detectives will not hesitate to arrest anyone found compromising the peaceful coexistence of the vast Sub-County.
