Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has angrily condemned Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s remarks on the death of the late Raila Odinga, calling them reckless and deeply disturbing.

Through his official X handle on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Babu said Governor Kahiga’s statements were unacceptable and must not be tolerated, especially at a time when the nation is still mourning the passing of the late ODM Party Leader.

“I unequivocally condemn the reckless and disturbing utterances made by Kahiga Mutahi. Such statements are unacceptable and must not be tolerated,” Babu wrote.

The outspoken legislator, known for his fiery defence of Raila Odinga, said the governor’s comments were not only disrespectful to the memory of the fallen leader but also a reflection of moral decay among sections of Kenya’s political elite.

Babu said Kenyans of goodwill should reject attempts to divide the country through insensitive political statements, adding that Raila’s life should be remembered with honour, not mocked for political gain.

Kahiga’s remarks on Raila’s death

Governor Mutahi Kahiga is facing a national storm after his comments at a burial in Nyeri went viral, sparking outrage across the political divide.

Speaking in Kikuyu, Kahiga suggested that Raila’s death was an act of God meant to “level the political field” and reset the balance of power ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“You guys can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. Everybody can see that. We did not harbor hate for anyone, but God came through for us,” Kahiga said.

He went on to add, “Because the plan that had been hatched, if you look keenly, all goodies were being directed there because of tomorrow’s plans. But God came and brought this thing. Who is God? Does he take ugali at somebody’s house or sleep in Kayole?”

“He came through in His own way. He saw up there that people in heaven are disagreeing a lot and came for Baba so that he can go and smooth things up there.”

The remarks have been condemned as divisive and insensitive by leaders from across the political spectrum, including ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and UDA Party Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, who have all called for Kahiga to apologise publicly.

Babu Owino joins the growing list of leaders demanding accountability and decency from elected officials, reminding Kenyans that Raila Odinga’s legacy of unity and democracy must not be dishonoured by careless words.
