One year down the line, the leaders in Siaya county and residents of Nyangoma Kogello, the ancestral home of former US president Barack Obama say they are yet to see the fruit of the Sauti Kuu resource centre he officially launched.

When Obama launched the project on July 16, 2018 with fanfare, residents beamed with joy expecting that the project would change their lives.

The resource centre, which is the brainchild of his stepsister Auma Obama was to provide a meeting place for the youth for positive interactions.

It was meant to offer vocational training for the youth with an aim of uplifting their living standards.

“The centre will provide a greater opportunity for  young people and that’s the goal of Sauti Kuu. It begins with our young people in places like this,” US former president had said.

But today some villagers and leaders in the region say they are yet to feel the fruits of the project.

Alego Usonga MP Samwel Atandi said he hasn’t seen any progress or development since the project was launched.

Input

“I haven’t seen any impact of the project since it was launched. I also don’t know what’s going on because I have never been contacted and I don’t know whether my input as the area MP is needed,” said Atandi who spoke to People Daily on phone said.

South East Alego MCA Joseph Mboha said they expected the training to kick off immediately after the launch but nothing has happened ever since.  “We are told there are some equipment that are yet to be brought. We have waited since last year hoping that our people would benefit but nothing has happened yet,” he said.

Dr Auma was earlier quoted in a section of international media last year saying the project would take off by the beginning of this year exuding confidence that everything was on course.

Yesterday, efforts to get  comments from Auma were fruitless. Reached for a comment, Said Obama, the former president’s uncle, said he is not aware of the project’s progress, adding that Auma is best placed to comment.
