Six inmates charge with capital offences successfully escaped from lawful custody at the Nanyuki GK Prison on Saturday September 25, 2021 at around 2:25 am.

The six were part of a larger group of 14 prisoners who broke out of the correctional institution. 8 inmates were re-arrested after a mission to recapture them was quickly instituted by officers responding to a distress call from the prison guards.

Officers attached to Nanyuki Police Station, who were on routine patrol within Likii area, responded to gunshot alarms that were emanating from the prison. The officers teamed up with DCI detectives and CIPU officers, and rushed to the scene that is about 3km west of the station.

They established that 14 prisoners charged with capital offences at the aforementioned prison had escaped. Operation in pursuit of the breakaway prisoners commenced immediately leading to the recapture of 8 of them.

The other six prisoners who are still in the lose were identified as; Mareri Tetkor ( who was charged with murder), Nangonye Lenawaso (charged with murder), Francis Kamau Nduati (charged with robbery with violence), Lereiyo Lekiare (charged with murder), Partrick Fundi ( charged with robbery with violence) and James Sike (charged with robbery with violence).

The scene was visited by the Sub County Police Commissioner, the District Criminal Investigation Officer and the Officer Commanding the Station. It was established that the escapees managed to cut door grills using a hacksaw, before jumping over the prison’s fence. Three hacksaws were recovered from the scene and kept as exhibit.

The police announced that a manhunt has been launched for the six escapees.
