Two elderly men have died after consuming a suspected contaminated illicit brew at Ngitana Village in Igembe North, Meru County, on Monday night.

Confirming the incident, Meru County Commissioner Jacob Ouma said the two died on the spot, while five others are receiving treatment in critical condition at Nyambene Level Four Hospital.

According to Ouma, preliminary investigations suggest that the locally brewed alcohol, known as “Mucege,” may have contained a lethal substance.

Villagers reported that the victims complained of severe stomach pain and vomiting shortly after consuming the drink before succumbing to the effects. They also claimed that the suspected brewer collapsed and died on the spot after tasting the same brew.

Speaking after visiting the scene, Commissioner Ouma warned that stern action would be taken against any local administrators found negligent in curbing the sale and production of illicit brews in the area.

“The government will not tolerate laxity. Any officer, including chiefs, found sleeping on the job will face severe disciplinary action,” Ouma noted.

Residents described the brewer as a known repeat offender who had been operating an illegal drinking den for years despite previous warnings.

Authorities have, however, launched investigations into the source of the contaminated brew, and efforts are underway to trace other possible victims.
