A 19-year-old man has been charged with assaulting a police officer by striking his head and destroying his phone

Job Mongere Bonyi who was arraigned and charged at Milimani law courts is alleged that on June 22, 2021, at Tassia within Nairobi county he assaulted corporal Orodi a police officer who at the time of arrest was on duty.

“Job Mongere Bonyi you are charged that on June 22, 2021, at Tassia within Nairobi county willfully and unlawfully damaged a mobile phone make Tecno valued at ksh15000 the property of corporal Orodi” read count two of the charge sheet.

Mongere is also alleged to have committed an offence of robbery with violence. The particulars of the offence are that on May 19, 2021 at about 9pm along Mbangathi highway within Nairobi county jointly with others not before court while armed with stone robbed Christine Kalekye OPPO mobile phone, Sh20,000, ATM cards and ID card all valued at ksh40,000.

He faces a total of four counts ranging from robbery with violence, malicious damage of property, assault causing actual bodily harm and resisting arrest.

He pleaded not guilty before Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku, and asked the court to release him on free bond, saying its the police officer who assaulted him and that he needed medical attention.

The magistrate then ordered the suspect to be taken to hospital before releasing him on bail.
