Azimio la Umoja  One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga’s lawyer Paul Mwangi now alleges that goons were hired to disrupt the anti-government protests held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 3, 2024,  the lawyer said the goons will not ruin the morale of the Gen Z activists in the fight against corruption and the high cost of living in the country.

He termed what happened on Tuesday during protests as an obvious script that lacks creativity, adding that violence had been unleashed on reform activists.

“What we saw yesterday during the Gen Z protests is actually a hilarious comedy show in comparison albeit disappointing for its lack of creativity. It was so obvious it was boring. And it will fail. Like has happened before in this country, violence has been unleashed on reform activists. History says it will not ruin the morale of the Gen Z activists,” Paul Mwangi said.

Comparing yesterday’s scenario to the multiparty democracy protest that happened 33 years ago, Mwangi said that the then ruling party which was against the multiparty democracy unleashed goons that attacked tribal communities that were supporting multiparty activists.

He further stated that violence is used as a tool to stop the clamour for change.

“We’ve been here before, where violence is used as a tool to stop the clamour for change. In 1991, in order to stop the countrywide demand for multiparty democracy, President Moi and his KANU minions unleashed goons that attacked entire tribal communities that were supporting multiparty activists,” Paul Mwangi said.

Paul Mwangi added that despite goons being hired to disrupt the multiparty reform and thousands of people displaced while others were killed, it did not stop the clamour for change.

“These goons were given logistical support by the provincial administration and security forces. Over 5000 people were killed and 75,000 displaced.  It did not stop the clamour for change,” he explained.
