The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted that parts of the country will experience isolated storms and intense rainfall beginning Sunday, December 10, 2023.

The most affected places include the Lake Victoria Basin, Central highlands, South Eastern lowlands, Southern Rift Valley, the Coastal strip, and Western Kenya.

As a result, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has warned Kenyans to adhere to flood alerts to avert injuries and fatalities.

“Beginning Sunday 10th December, isolated storms and intense rainfall are forecast for the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya & South Rift Valley. Residents are forewarned to adhere to weather and flood alerts to avert more injuries and fatalities,” Mwaura stated.

The intense rainfall is expected to occur between December 10 and 16, 2023.

Strong easterly winds of more than 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are expected over Turkana County while North Eastern and North Western Kenya are likely to be generally dry.

“Rainfall is expected to continue over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands and the Coast. Isolated storms and heavy rainfall are likely to occur over some parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya and South Rift Valley,” the Weatherman stated.
