President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed for immediate investigations to be done on the Masimba Shooting incident that happened on Thursday.

The president has directed for a compensation of up to Ksh.1.5M to be set aside by the National Treasury for the affected families by wild animals since 2017.

“The President directed the National Treasury this morning to set aside 1.5 Million for compensation. We have had a conversation with the County Commissioner and the PS for tourism; we look at all those who need to be compensated and start the process from next week,” Matiang’i said.

The CS apologized to the citizens saying immediate actions will begin tonight.

“I want to ask for forgiveness as a public officer and a Brother to everyone. We apologize for what happened. We will deploy helicopters tonight to start directing the animals to one side. This is to ensure that we live a normal life,” he added.

Matiang’i said actions will be taken against the officers who were involved in the ugly shooting scene.
He also said the government will take care of the bills of those who are currently admitted to the hospital due to injuries.

The President’s directive comes hours after the Independent Police Oversight Authority dispersed a Special team to conduct an investigation on the same.
On Thursday, 2nd June four people were shot dead and three others left with serious injuries during a protest at Masimba over a female teacher from Mashuru Sub-County who was killed by a stray elephant.

The demonstrators wanted to be heard by the local authorities including officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

Three succumbed to the gunshot wounds at the scene while one died while receiving treatment at Makindu Hospital.

So far since 2017 to date up to seven people have been killed by the wild animals which go astray.
