Commercial sex workers drawn from Mombasa County are decrying the shortage of government-supplied condoms.

The call girls now claim that for the past two months, they have not been receiving condoms and most public utilities have not been supplied with condoms hence putting their lives at risk.

Nkoko Injuu Africa executive director Maryline Laini said that lack of supply of condoms have put its members at risk of contracting HIV Aids and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) due to the nature of their work.

“Condoms have become very scarce our members are forced to buy condoms and if unable to buy they risk having unprotected sex, most of us prefer the ones supplied by the government due to their quality compared to ones sold at the shop,” Laini said.

Mombasa sex workers face hard economic times

She further noted that due to the hard economic time, most of their members were unable to buy condoms, and were relying on those supplied to public utilities and sex workers in the county.

“There is an allocation of condoms given to sex workers during the supply by the government, and we have run out of what we had in stock and we have advised our members to buy their own since no communication from the relevant authorities on when we will receive our next intake,” Laini said.

Laini appealed to the government to resolve the ongoing shortage to stop endangering more lives.

“This the source of our lively hood, and this are our tools of the trade and as we speak with or without work has to be done earn a living and fend for our families,” she said.
