President William Ruto on Thursday May 23, 2024, launched the Kenya Urban Mobility and Growth Threshold Programme during his US state visit.
The programme worth Ksh7.9 billion ( $60 million) was signed between Ruto and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
The programme aims at addressing the economic growth challenges related to land use and transport planning in the Nairobi Metropolitan.
Transport planning
“The Kenya Urban Mobility and Growth Threshold Programme, which we launched in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, will tackle the economic growth challenges related to land use and transport planning in the Nairobi Metropolitan,” Ruto posted on his social media platforms.
The programme will address transportation needs for pedestrians, advance safer transportation options for women, improve land use for investors, and catalyze financing for climate-friendly bus transit.

The MCC-Kenya Urban Mobility and Growth Threshold Program was first signed in September 2023.
“Today’s program launch marks an exciting milestone in the growing partnership between Kenya and the United States,” Ruto said during the launch in Washington, DC.
Nairobi residents to benefit
MCC CEO Alice Albright said the programme will benefit benefit all 4.3 million residents who call the Nairobi metropolitan area home.
The newly launched MCC-Kenya threshold programme, led in partnership with the Kenya Millennium Development Fund (KMDF), is MCC’s largest and most ambitious threshold program to date.
MCC is an independent U.S. government development agency working to reduce global poverty through economic growth.
Ruto will today Friday, May 24, 2024, finalize his four-day state visit to the US.
The visit has seen him sign various deals with the US and various organizations.
Ruto was on Thursday, May 23, 2024, hosted by the US President Joe Biden at White House in Washington, DC.
Ruto used the opportunity to urge the U.S. to hasten the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act which he said will provide new markets and help sustain Kenya’s economic growth.
“We persuade the U.S. to hasten the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act. This will provide new markets and help sustain our country’s economic growth. We are equally optimistic that Kenya and the U.S. will jointly design the right defense and security frameworks to help Kenya — as the anchor State — to deal with conflicts in the Eastern and Central Africa region,” Ruto said moments after his meeting with Biden.
