Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Presidential candidate Raila Odinga clarified his controversial remarks on Christianity.
Speaking to supporters in Machakos, Raila explained that he was an ardent advocate of the rights of other religious groups in the country.
While defending that he was misunderstood, the ODM leader further clarified that he was responding to the difficulties faced by Muslims seeking government services.
“There is a clip going around. I was addressing Muslim women who complained about discrimination. I explained the roots of prejudice in colonialism. The Anglican church was the Queen’s church. I was favoured at that time. I did not want to use that against Christianity,
“I am not against Christianity, the constitution protects the church and the right of any Kenyan to profess any religion. I am a Christian and an Anglican,” Raila remarked.
The former premier further stated that his remarks were blown out of context, clarifying that he was speaking based on historical context.
“I was just putting it in historical context, and I did not want to use it against Christianity,” Raila added.
While urging electorates to shun the remarks, the presidential hopeful further stated that the discrimination experienced by a section of religious groups in the country began during the colonial days.
Kalonzo defends Raila
Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also defended Raila, stating that the mishap was a huge misunderstanding.
“If anybody has misunderstood Raila Odinga, I apologize to any christian who feels offended by that clip,” Kalonzo stated.
