Murang’a gubernatorial aspirant Irungu Nyakera has called for speedy investigations into an incident where his campaign vehicles were destroyed and several of his supporters injured after a scuffle emerged between his team and another from his opponent.

Nyakera claims his caravan was on a meet-the-people tour in Gaturi ward when his supporters bumped into Wairagu wa Maai’s caravan in Kaweru and a fight erupted.

He said Wairagu’s supporters destroyed his vehicles by breaking windscreens while attacking his supporters using machetes.

“As a result, few people were injured and they were taken to hospital for treatment and they have also recorded a statement with the police,” he said.

“This was my last ward to tour after visiting all 34 wards in the county,” Nyakera said.

“The two teams met at Mahuaini and agreed that they will follow different paths but this was not the case,” he added.

The aspirant said his opponent’s team pursued his caravan to Kaweru where the fight erupted.

“Police have taken up the matter and we are hoping to get answers and those found culpable brought to book,” he remarked.

Murathi Magochi, a campaign strategist for Wairagu however said Nyakera is to blame for the incident claiming that they had planned for the tour in the area a week earlier.

“We had followed the due process in planning for the tour and had notified police but Nyakera decided to follow us on the same route,” he said.

“We cannot take responsibility for what happened yesterday because it was not our fault,” he added.

Murang’a East Police County Commander Mary Wakuu said several people have recorded statements over the incident and that investigators are delving deeper into the matter.

“We are expecting to interrogate more people about the incident and are hoping to get answers and those found culpable shall face the law,” she said.
