The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has confirmed the arrest of two touts and a driver that were filmed performing acrobatic acts while hanging precariously from a matatu.
In a tweet on Monday, October 3, 2022, NTSA said that the suspects will be charged accordingly.
“The driver and the 2 conductors have been arrested. They will be charged accordingly,” NTSA tweeted.
The undated video shows the touts dangerously hanging on the matatu, while at the same time stepping on another PSV.
The PSV, registration number KDH112E, belongs to Umoinner Sacco which operates from Nairobi’s Umoja Estate to CBD.
NTSA fines according to Traffic Act
The two touts, if found guilty, face a fine of Ksh1,000 each. According to the Traffic Act, anyone found travelling with any part of his or her body outside the automobile will be liable to pay a Ksh1,000 charge.
The touts, who had no official uniform and badges, will face another fine of Ksh3,000 if found guilty.
The diver could be charged with speeding or reckless driving. According to the Traffic Act, exceeding the speed limit by 1 to 5km/hr will earn a driver a warning. Those caught exceeding by 6 to 10 km/hr will shell out Ksh500 and for 11 to 15 km/hr, Ksh5,000. 16 to 20 km/hr surpass will attract a Ksh10,000 levy.
