A man who pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

The man identified as Hussein Abdalla Mohamed was sentenced after he escaped police custody on two instances. In the first instance, the convict escaped from police custody, where he was being held alongside three others for robbery with violence.

While appearing before Mombasa principal magistrate Vincent Adet, Abdalla told the court that he offered a police officer Ksh30,000 in exchange for his freedom.

He was re-arrested and held at the Central police station in Mombasa, where he managed to escape for the second time.

In the second instance, Abdalla managed to escape alongside six other suspects.

“It’s the devil who made me break out of prison for the second time. I was asleep when I heard a voice that the rest of the cellmates were escaping. On waking up, I found a big hole and the devil just told me to escape. I did not lead the other escapees in staging the prison break,” he told the court.

Since he was ready to mend his ways, Abdalla noted that he decided to surrender to the authorities at the Bamburi police station

“A plea of guilty has been entered and l hereby sentence you to 18 months in prison following your confession “, Adet ruled.

Following his testimony, two police officers; Hassan Bakari and Samuel Marwa, were interdicted.

Mohammed is yet to be charged for the second count of escaping from lawful custody. The magistrate ordered that the file is placed before another court to facilitate his sentencing.
