Health Ministry rubbishes reports of poor quality HIV testing kits in Kenya
By K24 Editorial, May 28, 2024The Ministry of Health has rubbished reports of poor quality HIV testing kits in Kenya and promised to deliver quality services.
The assurance was made by the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Harry Kimtai, who read a statement on behalf of the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Susan Nakhumicha.
The ministry said that as of December 2023, over 1.3 million PLHIV were under treatment across 3,752 facilities nationwide.
“Annually, Kenya conducts more than 8 million HIV tests across 8,851 testing sites, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to standardized and accessible testing services. Despite recent challenges questioning the quality of HIV testing services, the Ministry of Health reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards.
“Kenya remains steadfast in its fight against HIV/AIDS, holding the seventh position globally for its HIV epidemic. With approximately 1.4 million individuals living with HIV (PLHIV), the country persists in delivering comprehensive care and preventive measures,” the statement by the ministry on X said.
Recommended three-test algorithm
The PS also explained the process by which the ministry is hoping to get accurate tests.
“In line with global guidelines, Kenya has embraced the WHO-recommended three-test algorithm for HIV diagnosis, enhancing diagnostic accuracy. Despite challenges encountered recently questioning the quality of HIV testing services, the Ministry of Health reassures the public of its steadfast dedication to maintaining the highest standards.
“Rigorous capacity-building initiatives and robust quality assurance measures are in place to ensure the reliability and safety of testing services,” he added.
Kimtai also encouraged all citizens to continue availing themselves of HIV testing services nationwide.
“Healthcare providers and the public are urged to actively support ongoing surveillance efforts to uphold the integrity of testing services,” he concluded.
