A man has been arraigned before a Mombasa court over the offence of threatening to kill his mother by poisoning her drinking water.

Andre Songai Wanyonyi, who appeared before Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Rita Orora, pleaded guilty to the charges of threatening to kill his mother, Elizabeth Wanyonyi, and pleaded for leniency.

In his mitigation, Wanyonyi informed the court that it was true he had threatened to poison his mother’s drinking water after he learnt of her plans to sell the family’s plot left behind by his late father.

“I threatened her, it is true, however, I did it under the influence of alcohol since my mother wanted to sell a family plot behind my back that is the genesis of all this trouble between me and my mother,” the accused said.

Remorseful

He told the court that he was remorseful and would not repeat the same.

However, his pleadings did not melt the magistrate’s heart.

The magistrate directed that he be remanded at the Shimo la Tewa prison.

The charges read that on December 30, 2022, at, Kaa Chonjo Bandarini area in Mvita without lawful excuse uttered words threatening to kill by saying: ”Nitakuuwa kama vile bwanako alikufa ama nitakuekea sumu kwa maji na hivyo ndo nimeanza na wewe“.

The matter will be mentioned on January 10 for further directions.
