The County Government of Kilifi has issued a flood alert to its residents as heavy rains continue to cause havoc across the country.
In a statement on Tuesday, April 16, the county government urged the public to exercise caution due to the possibility of flooding in prone areas.
“In this rainy season, we urge the public to take caution on the possibility of flooding in the prone areas Be safe in case of flooding in your locality call us on our toll-free number 1535 County Emergency Operation Centre,” the statement read in part.
The residents were given crucial safety measures to be taken in the event of flooding.
They were advised to prioritize the safety of themselves and their families, as well as to check on elderly and vulnerable individuals.
Additionally, the county government recommended placing flood protection equipment such as sandbags in front of doors and around houses.
Residents were instructed to turn off electricity, gas, and water supplies if it was safe to do so and to avoid touching any electrical appliances, cables, or equipment while in floodwater to prevent the risk of electrocution.
Furthermore, they were reminded of the danger of walking or driving in floodwater, as it increases the risk of drowning.
For individuals caught in a flash flood, Kilifi residents were advised to move to higher ground immediately and call for help.
“Take care of yourself and your family members and check on the elderly vulnerable persons. Put all flood protection equipment and tools in place, such as sandbags in front of all doors and around the house. Turn off your electricity, gas and water supplies if it’s safe to do so. Never touch any electrical appliances, cables or equipment while in flood water-you risk electrocution Avoid walking or driving in flood water as it increases the risk of drowning. If you are caught in a flash flood get to higher ground immediately and call for help,” the statement read.

Heavy downpour
In an advisory, the Kenya Meteorological Department on Monday, April 15 said rainfall is expected to persist across several regions, with heavy downpours anticipated in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, South-eastern lowlands, Coast, and North-eastern Kenya.
The weatherman also predicted high daytime temperatures to hit the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
“High daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are anticipated in Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya,” the weatherman said
Additionally, moderate night-time temperatures ranging between 10°C and 20°C have been forecasted for the Central Highlands and Western Kenya.
